Isolated Footings
WHAT THEY ARE
Also called spread or pad footings, isolated footings are individual concrete bases supporting single columns and spreading the vertical loads into the soil below. They are the simplest and most common foundation type for small to moderate buildings where near‑surface soil has adequate strength.

HOW THEY TRANSFER LOADS
They transfer compressive forces from individual columns directly into the underlying soil through bearing and friction, reducing stress concentrations by a wider base.
SEISMIC BEHAVIOR
Under earthquake shaking, isolated footings interact with soil — uplift, rocking, and soil‑foundation‑structure interaction can alter the dynamic response. Their relatively low embedment makes them susceptible to settlement, rocking, and overturning if not designed for seismic loads. Designs that account for cyclic soil behavior and rocking can enhance energy dissipation.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR SAN FRANCISCO CLAY
Isolated footings are not recommended for this project. The soft clay soil would lead to excessive settlement and poor seismic performance. For immediate occupancy requirements, a deeper foundation system is necessary.
